My after market starter took a shit. I took it apart the last time and cleaned the contacts in the 'solinoid'. It's not anything like a car solinoid other than a magnet shoves the gear into the big gear behind the clutch basket. I will fix it, or have it fixed, but unless I have to take it apart to order parts, I'm riding it. I've never kicked a bike this large. I had a Triumph 500, no problems kicking that.

Re: Kick Starting a Shovelhead Stroker
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 2:59 PMTriumph 500 (250x2) isn't that bad to start.
Stock Shovel 1200 (600x2) is, well, an experience, but with stock CR's nothing to worry. It is different, tho.
Stroker shovel, unk but bigger is more of the same. Just make sure that damn starter pinion gear is engaged. And (if you're running a mag) the spark is retarded. otherwise... Wheeee...
Hey, if I can kick over an ULH, then you sure as heck can do a shovel!

Re: Kick Starting a Shovelhead Stroker
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 2:52 PMI'm getting the hang of it, It's not awful if it starts on the second try. I bring a clean set of plugs with me. -

Re: Kick Starting a Shovelhead Stroker
Sun, May 11, 2008 - 4:32 PMalways good to carry spare plugs, but you can stretch the change interval by buying emery boards, which are much cheaper, usually 10/$1.49 or less. Cleaning plugs makes better spark.
My boxer will start easily on the third kick, if it's been prime-kicked several times, and it's not too cold, and the carbs are fairly in sync. It starts on the first kick if it's very warm out.
God, I love the electric button! And having a battery tender in the garage! -

Re: Kick Starting a Shovelhead Stroker
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 3:25 PMI said clean, not new. I don't throw them away until the insulator or electrodes look bad. I use a copper brush & emory cloth- whatever works. The routine is the same on the shovel, prime with a couple o' squirts and the enrichner on to the compression stroke, kick with no throttle then it starts most of the time, When its warm, no enrichner, find the compression stroke kick with a little throttle.
It's just a mother of a kick.
I haven't got the parts for the starter yet. -

Re: Kick Starting a Shovelhead Stroker
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 3:30 PMOh! a friend of mine just got an old 500cc long stroke Norton single (early 50s). Just looking at it with that big old cylinder makes me think kicking nightmare! He needs to rebuild it yet to find out what it kicks & sounds like.
